Speed tests only tell some of the story

Look at these images. What story is being told?

Story 1: Image 1 shows that speed from device -> router -> destination (best case) is. This is the SAME way your Camera flows data to your Mac or iPad running Ecamm, Wirecast, Switcher Studio or others.

Compare Story 1 Image 1 to Image 2, what’s different? Image 2 shows the internet speed from the internet -> device directly (1 gig down / 250 up possible). Next data point is the device -> router speed — which is much higher.

Wait — Device -> Router speeds are GREAT and should be perfect for streaming. Wrong!

Why: Image 1 again tells more of the story. Let’s break it down:

•Video feed is transmitted from Cam -> Router.

•Router confirms receipt from Cam 1 of video feed.

•Router transmits video feed -> Mac / Switcher

•Mac / Switcher confirms receipt

•Then the process starts repeats over and over.

Image 1 better reflects the part of the story that you should be paying attention to. Notice how the speeds in Image 1 (blue/purple) are different from speed listed for PHY Down/Up speed. Those are the max theoretical speeds — which will NEVER happen.

Now again compare Image 1 speeds (blue/purple) to Image 2 speeds… big difference.

There’s a whole lot more to consider when using wireless devices on your network, but this is just 1 very quick and simple way the UDM router gives way more data points than most other systems out there for wifi.

Punchline: Buy the UDM if you’re serious about getting consistent results for your wifi network. It offers really advanced tools that are really EASY to use.
