Looking back at the last year in the world of live streaming events, interviews, presentations and more, the biggest take away is speed matters. Up to this point, CC8 & 9 served us well, but as streamlined as they are, aren’t simple, capable and fast enough for run-and-gun situations. CCX remedies that problem while preserving the capability of expansion, all day battery life and the ability to record and live stream simultaneously.
Single Cam / Switcher
Having to lug around extra stuff doesn’t work, even if it’s just 1 phone for a camera + 1 phone as the switcher. CCX embraces the strengths of tools like Switcher Studio and it’s higher quality recording/streaming in update 4.4 to no longer rely on functions like Director Mode for higher quality to edit promos after a stream.
Need graphics? No problem. Switcher Studio on the single device has the ability to easily incorporate images, titles or pre-cut videos. In horizontal mode, swipe up from the bottom to display sources, graphics and more.
Now is a great time to upgrade to the iPhone 11 Pro — having 3 cameras in 1 device is unbelievable! The 3 optical lengths should be all you need for anything you face.
Multi Mic Mix & Record
This is a huge deal. There isn’t a better solution that as of writing this article that has the functionality, quality or compactness of the Zoom F6. This device’s hefty price tag is WELL worth it. Multiple output types, 6 XLR inputs, 32bit float recording, Multiple power options – and my favorite: the ability to secure it to your hip using everyday belt. Stop what you’re doing and buy the F6.
When is comes to quality microphones that are wireless, the options are slim that aren’t a pain to configure (each use), prevent interference in any environment, and are compact. The Sennheiser AVX line is the best of the best. They come with a big price tag, but in my experience trying other options in convention centers, event venues, corporate buildings and more across the U.S., the price is 100% justifiable for how many problems and hassle you won’t have.
Movement
Static shots are boring. After touring the country in the last 360, I’m blown away by how many ‘pros’ live in the world of yesterday – big equipment, lots of cords & tripods — Friends there is a better way to do it and not have to lug around loads of cases. Enter the DJI Osmo Mobile 3. As a Steadicam Operator I love this device. All day battery, super smooth movements, almost no configuration and can carry a much heavier payload than previous generations. Feel free to get your steps in and show a dynamic story throughout the space all in 1 take.
Pair it with a 2nd AVX sending audio from your F6 to the camera/switcher wirelessly and you’ll wonder where this solution’s been your entire life.
Wire(less)
Personally, I loath cords. CCX is a dream for reducing clutter and having a better (pro) appearance. Should you go with the AVX line of mics, you’ll already have most of what’s needed. Inside the AVX box are 2 needed cables:
TRS to TRS (shielded) - This is a hard cable to find anywhere else. Wireless audio equipment requires cables with a lot of shielding. The provided cable is perfect from taking audio out from the F6 to the AVX Transmitter.
XLR to TRS - I’ve looked at many other available solutions and this single cable just works for taking audio from the F6 output receiver into the TRS to TRRS cable (details below.)
TRS to TRRS - This is the only cable you’ll purchase separately. It preps the signal for the next adapter.
Apple Lightning to Headphone - This lovely adapter comes with every iPhone. Plug the cables in the order identified (1,2,3,4) and you’ll be good to go.

No diffusion on 40% = 45min runtime. We’ve used this for short 10 min interviews in the field for 8+ hours. Which is good news for your fingerprints as this light can get warm!
